Full Time NewBookmark Details
Hybrid, Chicagoland or New York City
What you will be doing:
The Director of Risk & Controls will lead the second line of defense for financial and operational controls, with a primary focus on strengthening and uplifting the Company’s SOX and internal control environment. Reporting to the Chief Accounting Officer (CAO), this role plays a critical leadership position in designing, embedding, and sustaining a mature, scalable controls framework that supports business growth, transformation initiatives, and regulatory compliance. The role will lead a globally dispersed risk and controls team, maintaining appropriate second-line independence, while driving remediation of the material weakness and strengthening control confidence globally.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the design, enhancement, and ongoing oversight of the Company’s SOX program and broader internal control framework.
- Drive remediation of and uplift control deficiencies, including material weaknesses and significant deficiencies, ensuring timely and sustainable resolution through robust tracking and progress monitoring mechanisms.
- Establish clear control ownership, accountability, and documentation standards across the organization.
- Drive control maturity by embedding scalable, repeatable practices and establishing KPIs to ensure consistent execution and long-term sustainability.
- Demonstrate the ability to lead control environment transformations, elevating the organization from reactive, compliance-driven models to proactive, risk-based, and scalable control frameworks.
- Partner with business and technology teams on transformational initiatives (e.g., ERP and application implementations, system migrations, process redesigns) to ensure controls are designed and embedded upfront.
- Promote the transition from manual, detective controls to preventive and automated controls where feasible, while driving continuous control rationalization.
- Serve as the second line of defense, providing independent oversight to first-line process owners.
- Coordinate closely with Internal and External Audit teams to align testing approaches, reduce duplication, and strengthen overall assurance coverage.
- Lead, manage, and develop a global, dispersed team of risk and controls professionals, fostering consistent standards, strong execution, and collaboration across regions and functions.
- Promote a strong risk and controls culture that emphasizes accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement.
What you need to succeed:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field (CPA, CIA, CISA preferred).
- 12+ years of experience in SOX, internal controls, risk management, audit, or controllership, including leadership roles. Public accounting experience is required.
- Deep knowledge of SOX, the COSO framework, and internal control best practices.
- Experience leading or supporting control uplift, remediation, or transformation efforts in complex or evolving environments.
- Strong understanding of IT general controls (ITGCs) and automated controls.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to drive performance across geographically dispersed teams with direct and indirect reporting relationships.
- Proven ability to operate effectively as a second-line function, balancing independence with partnership.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Proven leadership and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
- Demonstrated experience working in a global matrix organization and leading group efforts through influence and communication via strong interpersonal skills.
- Detail-oriented mindset with a commitment to accuracy and integrity in financial reporting.
- Collaborative mindset with the ability to work cross-functionally.
- Experience working with SAP, OneStream, Blackline, or similar systems is preferred, though not required for this role.
